🤿 The TDI CCR Training Pathway
Progressive Closed Circuit Rebreather Development
This page introduces the full Closed Circuit Rebreather training pathway delivered under the standards of Technical Diving International (TDI).
Each course builds directly on the last — developing deeper technical knowledge, stronger procedural discipline, and higher operational capability with a life-support system.
This is structured progression.
Not rushed certification.
At ESS-TEK, every level is taught to produce divers who understand their equipment, anticipate problems, and manage real-world diving conditions with confidence.
🧭 The TDI CCR Course Progression
The pathway moves from fundamental rebreather operation through staged decompression, helium-based gas strategies, and ultimately full deep mixed-gas technical diving.
🟢 CCR Air Diluent Diver
Your foundation in closed circuit diving
This is the entry point into CCR diving and your transition from open circuit to life-support system management.
You will learn:
✔ Unit setup, operation, and maintenance
✔ Loop management and buoyancy control
✔ PPO₂ monitoring and control
✔ Gas physiology and dive planning fundamentals
✔ Emergency procedures and failure response
✔ No-decompression CCR diving
Training develops the core operational discipline required for safe rebreather diving before moving into decompression or helium-based gas strategies.
🟡 CCR Air Diluent Decompression Diver
OR
🟡 CCR Helitrox Diver
First staged decompression and extended depth training
These courses represent the next operational level — introducing formal decompression diving on a rebreather.
Both sit at the same progression stage but develop different gas strategies:
Air Diluent Deco CCR
- Decompression procedures using air-based diluent
- Extended dive planning and bailout strategy
- Structured staged decompression execution
Helitrox CCR
- Introduction of helium-based diluent blends
- Reduced narcosis and improved gas density
- Decompression diving using air / nitrox / helium mixtures
Training typically expands operational capability to around 45 metres while introducing full decompression procedures and advanced dive management.
🔵 CCR Mixed Gas Diver
Expanded depth and full helium diluent diving
This is the transition into true deep mixed-gas CCR diving.
You will learn:
✔ Use of helium-based diluents with reduced oxygen fractions
✔ Advanced gas planning and management
✔ Custom decompression strategies
✔ Failure response in deeper environments
✔ Technical dive execution to extended depth
Divers are trained to conduct CCR dives using helium diluent to significantly greater depths — typically up to around 60 metres depending on configuration and planning.
⚫ CCR Advanced Mixed Gas Diver
Full deep technical CCR diving capability
This is the highest operational CCR diver level — enabling complex deep technical dives using mixed gas and extensive decompression.
Training focuses on:
✔ Deep dive mission planning
✔ Advanced decompression management
✔ Multiple bailout and contingency strategies
✔ Precision system control under high workload
✔ Complex gas logistics and operational discipline
Divers may plan and execute deep mixed-gas CCR dives well beyond recreational or moderate technical limits when trained and equipped appropriately.
🧠 What Makes ESS-TEK Training Different
At ESS-TEK, CCR training is not delivered as a checklist exercise.
We focus on:
✔ Real understanding of system behaviour
✔ Decision-making under pressure
✔ Scenario-based problem solving
✔ Equipment mastery
✔ Procedural discipline
✔ Calm, controlled execution
We are not here to produce “certified divers”.
We develop competent CCR operators capable of managing real diving conditions, real failures, and real responsibility.
Progression happens when skill and judgement are ready — not when minimum requirements are simply completed.
🚀 Start Your CCR Progression
Whether you are:
✔ Beginning your rebreather journey
✔ Moving into decompression diving
✔ Introducing helium into your gas strategy
✔ Expanding depth capability
✔ Preparing for advanced technical exploration
There is a clear next step in the TDI CCR pathway.
Choose your course and continue developing as a disciplined, capable rebreather diver.
